Overview
The discussion focuses on the Destiny gaming community's relationship with Bungie, covering enjoyment of the game, community criticism, accountability, bugs, reward systems, and the need to lower barriers to play. It explores different community attitudes, Bungie's responses to feedback, and the dynamics between content creators and their audience.
Enjoyment and Critique of Destiny
The speaker insists that their enjoyment of Destiny is genuine, not influenced by Bungie, despite frequent accusations of being a "paid shill."
Destiny is praised for its unique blend of PvE and PvP, with day one raids, dungeons, and a wide variety of build options making it stand out among first-person shooters.
The PvE side of Destiny is described as being in a league of its own, offering challenging content like epic raids and dungeons that create memorable experiences, even when they are difficult or frustrating.
The speaker enjoys the competitive aspect of Destiny, comparing it favorably to other games like Path of Exile and Borderlands, but notes that Destiny uniquely satisfies their competitive itch.
Frustrations include bugs, lack of rewards after investing time, and issues with certain activities (e.g., Contest of Elders), which can make the game feel unrewarding, especially for players with limited time.
The speaker notes that if Bungie stopped providing raids and dungeons, Destiny would lose much of its appeal for them.
Community Sentiment and Accountability
The Destiny community is known for its critical nature and strong memory, often recalling Bungie's past statements and actions in detail.
Community feedback has led to real changes, such as moving Iron Banner armor from Eververse to being earnable through gameplay, showing that vocal criticism can influence Bungie's decisions.
There is skepticism about Bungie’s motivations, with some believing changes only happen after public backlash, but there is also recognition that community pressure does have an effect.
The community is divided into groups: those who want the game to fail so they can quit, those who defend Bungie no matter what, and a middle group that fluctuates between criticism and support.
Some players are described as being addicted to Destiny, hoping for the game to "burn" so they have a reason to quit, while others are unwaveringly positive or critical.
The speaker emphasizes that holding Bungie accountable is important, and the community is persistent in tracking Bungie's promises and actions.
Barriers to Play and System Improvements
Lowering barriers to accessing content is highlighted as essential, especially for players with limited gaming time who want immediate and rewarding experiences.
The speaker criticizes bugs and technical issues that waste players' time and diminish enjoyment, stressing the need for Bungie to address these problems.
Complex systems, confusing interfaces, and inventory management are seen as obstacles for both new and veteran players, making it harder to jump into the game and enjoy content.
The introduction of open matchmaking and features like those in "Destiny Rising"—including matchmaking for all activities and priority matchmaking for friends—are praised as positive steps toward reducing barriers and improving the player experience.
The speaker calls for more open matchmaking and streamlined systems to make it easier for everyone to participate in content and earn rewards.
Bungie’s Communication and Response
Bungie has publicly acknowledged past failures and expressed a commitment to building positive momentum and regaining community trust, as seen in communications from team members like DMG.
The company has promised roadmaps and future improvements, aiming to address missteps and rebuild its relationship with players.
The community is encouraged to continue holding Bungie accountable, as ongoing feedback and public commentary are seen as necessary for driving change and ensuring promises are kept.
Community Dynamics and Content Creation
The speaker addresses the dynamic between content creators and their audience, noting that critics ("haters" or "dedicated fans") are highly engaged, often watching entire videos and providing valuable feedback—even if negative.
Accusations of bias or being a "paid shill" are common, with the speaker noting that any stance—positive or negative—can draw criticism from different segments of the community.
Content creators benefit from high engagement, as even negative comments and watch time from critics help with ad revenue and channel growth.
The speaker advises podcast participants to avoid reading overly negative comments but acknowledges that criticism is an inevitable and even beneficial part of content creation.
The community's passion, whether positive or negative, is seen as a driving force that keeps both Bungie and content creators accountable and engaged.
Decisions
Move Iron Banner Armor to Activity Rewards: In response to community feedback, Bungie removed Iron Banner armor from Eververse and made it available only through gameplay, demonstrating the impact of collective action.
Adjustments Based on Feedback: Bungie has shown willingness to make changes when the community holds them accountable, such as removing controversial items or altering reward structures.
Action Items
Bungie: Continue addressing bugs, technical issues, and lowering barriers to content access. Improve communication and follow through on promised changes.
Community/Content Creators: Maintain accountability by providing consistent feedback, public commentary, and holding Bungie to their commitments. Continue to highlight issues and push for improvements in the game.
Destiny Community and Bungie Relations
Alone, I'm completely paid off by Bungie. And that's the only reason why, buddy. Actually, this channel is owned by Bungie. And that's, we hit the go live button and that's what we do, man. All I know is if I just keep playing this game, of course, keep ending up in my driveway.
Hashtag BungieGrid. Now the other possibility, and this seems to shock everyone every time, is what if I told you that I find Destiny to kind of be fun to play? Fuck. That can't possibly be the case.
Right, right, right. Can I be honest? I feel like the community would rather me say, I am bought and paid for by Bungie Incorporated, rather than me look at you guys and say, I kind of think the game's fun to play.
You see where I'm coming from? You would rather me say that than say, I think the game's kind of fun to play sometimes. Fuck. Be specific.
Which part of the game is fun right now? Look, man, you find me a game that has in-game like Destiny's. That's a first person shooter.
It has PvP and PvE. That gives me day one raids and day one dungeons with a variety of different builds and truly is. People talk shit about it. Destiny's PvE side is really in a league of its own.
And if you don't think that's the case, and if you want to say that this game is easy or casual or whatever, there's an epic raid coming next week. Load the fuck up. Jump in that bitch.
Without a cheater. Oh, wow, an unfun raid yet again? Hey, man, it was fun to me.
I had a great time. I had a blast, man. Look, I love that shit.
Salvation's Edge, I love that shit. I like it when my teammates and I fucking hate each other. I love that shit. I'll reach my less threshold about halfway through a raid. I'm like, I can't stand this goddamn dude.
When you reach that point when you're like, I'm never raiding with these fuckers. That's when you know you're having a great time now, man. You're making some of the greatest memories right there. Oh, man, this last raid, even though it was pain, it was immense pain the entire time, I fucking loved it.
And the thing is, there's a lot of great games. From just a gaming perspective, I would love to just sit back and have a good time playing. Destiny is...
It just scratches that competitive itch, I suppose. Oh, Path of Exile is up there. Big time.
PoE 2 does it for me, man. I would say PoE 2, um... It's one of the most addicting games I've ever played.
I love Path. I like Borderlands, but I love Path. Dude, if GGG ever made a looter shooter, holy shit.
Fucking ready, my man. But again, you ask me why I play this game? There's just been nothing that has given me... Hey, look, here's the thing.
Bungie could turn around and not give us any more raids in the future. There could come a day where Bungie says, hey, listen, no more raids, no more dungeons. We'll give you some six player activities and your Sparrow Racing League and call it a day.
And if that ever happened, then Destiny would lose its appeal for me. Big time. I love this game, always did.
And I just feel powerless when I try to have fun after 30 minutes of Contest of Elders, I get no rewards, not a single drop. You're playing Contest of Elders? When?
Like right now? You've been playing Contest of Elders? It was bugged for me after the update. Yeah. Look, in my opinion, the thing that's really dragging Destiny down more so than anything is these fucking bugs, man.
You got to get that shit under control. And I'm not talking about the fun bugs. I'm talking about the things that hurt the game. Some of you guys, y'all work all day.
Y'all come home. The last thing you want to do is commit an hour to something and show nothing for it. You guys that have just a small window there to game, I completely agree.
You need to have... very little barriers to jumping into the content that you want to play and also have rewards reflecting that. And that should really be the goal of anyone that's making a video game, but especially a live game.
How do we lower the barriers? How do we make it so you can, when you get in, you're playing the game. You're not playing inventory management for 45 minutes. Uh, You're not trying to find where you need to go or what you need to play, which is the portal is trying to address that. But then also at the same time, it's confusing.
There's just a lot of confusing aspects. I'm used to these customized. Like, I'm used to coming here and pressing things and customizing stuff at this point.
But look, I completely understand if some of you guys are fucking overwhelmed with this shit. And goddammit, open matchmaking for everything. Just gotta lower the barriers.
Lower the barriers. Dude. Dude, Destiny Rising really does show it.
Destiny Rising has matchmaking for everything. And what makes Destiny Rising so unique is that it not only has matchmaking for everything, but it has priority matchmaking. So if you're in a situation where your friend is jumping into a pinnacle op, it will automatically match you guys together if you happen to be matchmaking at the same time. Destiny Rising's infrastructure is literally taking what I just said. Lower barriers, get you in the game, let you play some shit.
Granted, you'll get text messages from Pandora about whatever new deal is on the store that day. But, you know, you win some, you lose some. Did I read DMG's tweet? Oh, yeah, yeah.
Is this the one you guys are talking about? So this is from Captain Relic... The Brass Dragon. So right here from DMG, we need to build momentum and maintain it.
Let's fucking do this thing. DMG replied... It sucks that we've been unable to build positive momentum.
Too many bombs in the road and missteps. I truly believe we are beginning to shift and head in the right direction. Roadmap to come and I hope it helps us rebuild trust as we move toward renegades and beyond.
Much love. This guy right here, Brock. As someone new to Destiny since the age of 8, this is all so strange with the overwhelming negative sentiment.
The game must have been unreal during some of the peak DLCs and such. I mean, we've had some good times. We've had some high highs.
You know what I'm saying? Look, man. What do you want me to do, guys?
Kick Bungie. All we can do is continue to do what we've been doing. Hold him accountable. You saw that happen this past week with the old Iron Banner armor sets. And that's it.
And... we just keep holding them accountable they say that they're going to do something they don't follow through hold them accountable we make the videos to call out on it and go from there and it's not just us many people in the community and we see that bungie makes adjustments based on that so you guys are able to keep bungie in check and it'd be foolish for bungie not to listen Holding them accountable does nothing though. It's clear they're not caring. Obviously they care.
They fucking removed the armor sets from Eververse. They gave us the other armor set as an earnable armor set only through Ironbatter. So when you say it doesn't do anything, well, how do you explain today that? Yeah, after they got caught? That's what I...
Look, look. Again, you've got the power to continue holding Bungie accountable. And look, man, y'all worse than an ex-old lady. Okay? Y'all fucking remember everything.
You guys are like, y'all pulled out the receipts. You're like, Bungie, you remember when you said this on this date and how you said it and what you were wearing when you said it and what you ate right after you said it? You remember that? That's the Bungie community. That's the Destiny community.
And I can promise you, y'all gonna keep doing that shit. And this will force Bungie to make the decisions they need to make. Or at least we hope.
At least we hope. This is my buddy's like, fuck you. Why we got Eververse armor in there?
Iron Banner in the Eververse? You know why. Money. But I don't think anybody at Bungie would ever do that.
Because we're grading? Look, man, I don't know what the costs are or their overhead. All right. So I think throwing things in the Eververse occasionally is all right.
But when you have things like Ash and Iron and you've got obviously premium paid players, this is where Bungie, this is where Destiny gets really weird because if it's like, hey, I'm going to go buy a damn an armor ornament to look like a fucking something from Dungeons and Dragons or Star Wars, right? I can't pull it out of the store. Where the fuck is? Or maybe I want to make my stern look a little bit sexier, right? But when it's something like Iron Banner, and that's like really the only thing we got going on right now.
It's not like we're just like, all right, well, we don't want to do Iron Banner. I'll go play a bunch of other shit. That's our main event this week.
The armor that's associated with it or any of the rewards associated with it, shitheads. should be right there from the activity itself. And I think you guys have taught Bungie a lesson on this that you're not gonna stand for. I think so. Maybe that's the copium meme, but I believe y'all taught them a lesson.
And so for future events, they shouldn't be doing that mess. And listen, if they do, I know one thing about this community, you'll be the first ones to call it out. They'll for sure do it again and you guys will be ready. You guys will be ready.
If the community is not happy that something's wrong, oh man. Look, I'm going to be honest with you. 60% of you are just unhappy all the fucking time when it comes to Destiny.
And look, this is coming back to Witch Queen. We're going to have some of the most peak moments in Destiny. Y'all bitch.
Y'all bitch a lot. Why do you want to tell you this? Of course. But y'all bitch a lot.
I'm in the 60%, brother. Yeah, maybe. I don't know.
I go back and forth. I hover around the edge. they got no reason to complain they're just miserable now hold up there are some things that are not it's not unfounded complaint look man there are definitely things that are problems without a doubt but then there's just people over there that just want to burn it down and And don't look.
You're in this stream right now. I know some of you in here right now. Don't lie to me. You want to watch this shit burn.
You fucking want to watch this shit burn. Every day, you're like, I got the lotion. Let me pull up Twitter.
Is Bungie fucking up? Let me screw up this shit. Look, every time. And I see y'all. Because you drop comments all the time.
You want to watch this shit burn. burn you hear me can i can i also say this too there's a portion of the community that just hates destiny and bungee and they want to watch it all burn but then there's a portion of the community that's addicted to destiny and they want to watch destiny burn so that they could quit so that they can walk away for good now those my people i love those people you know why i too had this addiction once to a game called runescape i almost went into this loop of almost self-destruction where i wanted jx to up so bad That I would have a reason to walk away. And then they did it. They did it with Evolution of Combat. They gave me my reason.
Turns out, I was sadder. Sadder than I thought I would be. And look, on the opposite side of the spectrum is just your glazers. Your people that see no wrong.
That loves everything Bungie does. That's like, oh, don't be mean to the multi-billion dollar corporation. I like to believe that we're in the middle.
Some of us here, we're in the middle. And we can go back and forth between the two. Oh, you think I glazed Bungie?
Brother. Brother. Let me tell you something. You know what?
We go back and forth so much with y'all on this. I said Renegades looks good, and you guys are like, fucking paid shill. We put a thumbnail out on the Eververse situation with Iron Man armor.
And what did we get for that? We did Doom Post Cross. Wow.
Always taking those Doom opportunities. Now, listen. I can navigate y'all's bipolar asses.
But again, for some of the people on the outside, it probably has an effect on them. I literally tell the people in the podcast, Liv, Les, and Luke, I'm like, probably don't want to read the comments too much in the podcast videos. But to be honest with you, I love the haters. The haters are my favorite. And I wouldn't even call them haters.
I call them dedicated fans. You see, the haters slash dedicated fans, they show up for every video. They comment every time. And even better than that, they watch all the way to the point where we might possibly fuck up. And they comment.
Therefore, we get good watch time. The haters slash dedicated fans are fantastic for ad revenue. So keep doing your thing, fellas. We'll keep doing ours. Slap that like button like your mama told you, right?
We got a comment yesterday from a Twitch chatter asking us why we're still playing Destiny 2.
Aside from us being a paid Bungie shill, is it out of the realm of possibility that the game might actually still be somewhat fun to play at times?
