Destiny 2 2024 Year-End Update
What's up guys, Houndish here and today we get an end of year 2024 developer update from Bungie regarding Destiny 2. This isn't something we were anticipating that we would actually see, but Bungie are obviously taking the opportunity to jump in and talk with the community more widely about the game, their future plans, some of the content they were going to see soon with Episode Heresy, and how they're looking forward to 2025. They also respond to a bit of feedback. about the episode model, issues that are frequently being brought up in the community at the moment, and some general insights which are pretty interesting. So I figured we'd jump in and cover this in a video, especially given community sentiment at the moment. I think Bungie probably have made the right choice by stepping in to speak about the game before the end of the year, especially given that we'll have a sort of gap over the holiday season where things will naturally go pretty quiet.
So I guess they're trying to calm nerves a little bit. Some players will appreciate that, others perhaps less. But...
Nonetheless, we'll talk about what they've got to say today, so if you find the video useful, get subscribed and I'll keep you posted with more content. Now though, let's get into it. Bungie show off some of that cool Apollo artwork that they showed back a little while ago now.
And getting straight in, we've got Robbie Stevens, the Assistant Game Director for Destiny 2, and he says over the past few months we've been sharing details about the future of D2 in developer deep dive articles. The Destiny 2 team is hard at work paving the way for codename Frontiers. The new destination in Codename Apollo is content complete. That means we're focused on polishing the non-linear campaign, Metroidvania gameplay experience, as well as developing the finer details of the world and fleshing out the numerous quests that you'll discover during the journey through new frontiers. And so that sounds encouraging, I guess.
It's nice to know that there are some more significant bits of Destiny content, generally the more interesting stuff, right in expansions, which is being polished up at this point. And they say the core game portal Activities, modifiers, and next generation gear that will be Destiny's new backbone are coming online. We're playtesting every week and we've planned multiple summits in the coming months with members of the D2 community to provide invaluable feedback and help us on our executions. Additionally, we're hiring a handful of gameplay specialist positions. Our specialists, sourced from the community, will be in the trenches with the dev team, playtesting the new core game progression and gameplay systems, as well as Codename Apollo's campaign and post-game.
These specialists provide us with the kind of perspective that you can only get from dedicated players. We'll be going dark on Codename Frontier's communications for a little while. The team needs time to playtest, collect feedback, and cook before we emerge again with more details.
But overall, you know, these are just words in a blog post, but it sounds like a positive way to look forward. And of course, if there's more feedback that will come directly from the community, playtesting, which as we've seen is very important, that doesn't necessarily include QA and kind of finding bugs and fixing them. but having more community feedback in one form or another about the upcoming content sounds like a good thing overall. And to go on to say, Destiny has a long history of reinventing itself in response to community feedback and the expectations of players.
Our North Star, however, remains unchanged, and we strive to build worlds that inspire friendship and create amazing gameplay experiences that leave an undeniable mark on people's lives. We've started breaking bones and trying new things with episodes. Some of those changes have been well-received.
by the community like the Vespas Host Dungeon Race. The team found just the right mix of challenge and length to elevate the dungeon to set the bar by contest raids, and they confirmed there will be another race for the dungeon that will launch with heresy in February. Other changes though they say have had a rocky start. Weapon crafting removed the joy of earning a random weapon, that feeling that any drop could matter, so we introduced enhanceable weapons. But they do add that Revenant tonics were meant to provide loot agency in lieu of crafting and give you a fresh way to chase gear, but we know we'll miss the mark with tonic timers and not guaranteeing a weapon from the active tonic.
So we're in the process of developing changes to make tonics last longer, and give payouts on top of a series of bug fixes, which are planned for December 17th, so some of those changes will be good. They do say though, we see how these changes are putting pressure on your vault, and we're in the early stages of planning long term changes to relieve vault pressure. that will start to manifest later in the year of Codename Frontiers.
So that sounds good, but they say in response to the desirability of seasonal weapons in the short term for Heresy, we've developed a new tier of seasonal weapon dubbed the Heretical Arsenal. There'll be more details on these weapons as we approach Heresy, but rest assured that it will be clear when they hit your inventory that they're worth inspecting. These changes are stepping stones that help us evaluate our long-term plans to create a deeper weapon chase in Codename Frontiers.
So I'm curious to see what that will be about. And next they talk about episodes introducing new content cadences with acts. And they say while there are new activities, loot, and quests rolling out at a consistent cadence, this change created lulls in our gameplay calendar at the end of an episode. So for the final weeks of Red Dead...
Revenant, there'll be a special pursuit similar to Revenant's wishes, where you can complete quests to choose from a list of new and desirable rewards. I'm guessing that that is a nod to the Bento token quest things that have been sort of leaked in the database, so curious to see what that'll be about. Otherwise though, they say they have evaluated feedback from Revenant's content rollout, and we've made changes to Heresy that strike a better balance between everything dropping on day one of an act versus meaningful reasons to return throughout the episode. We're taking an approach where the vast majority of activity content will be available the first day of an act, and subsequent weeks will add or evolve that content based on the story.
Also, we're adjusting the act rollout schedule so there is less downtime in the gameplay calendar later in the episode. Heresy will be the last season in the episode format. It did make me chuckle that they've referred to it both as a season and an episode in the same sentence, but the team has been taking big swings to create new activities that evolve throughout the episode, and create big secrets to uncover. on the Dreadnought. Obviously there's nostalgia for the Dreadnought, I'm glad they're talking about there being plenty of secrets to uncover.
I'm curious how that space is going to return, and whether there'll be an explorable element to it, we'll find out. But lastly, they say as Revenant approaches its final act, where you'll delve into Dracula's castle-inspired fortress, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on some feedback we've received around the echoes in Revenant's story. Our first two episodes had a tight focus, establishing Maya Sundaresh and her Echo of Command as a force to be reckoned with, and Fikral re-emerging with the power to create an undead army for a last showdown with the Guardian and his dad.
And we set out to deliver on narrative promises that set up in the Light and Darkness saga, that we couldn't tie off with the final shape, the Kell of Kells, Hive siblings, and showcase in the effect that the Witness has on the world and more. By prioritising satisfying conclusions, we want to clear a path for bold new storylines in the saga to come, and in Heresy, were widening the focus of the story to the Hive Pantheon, and ancient eldritch forces that shape the universe, the events of Heresy close the door on the Light and Darkness saga, and act as a prologue to Codename Popolo, where the Guardian's purpose in the next saga starts to take focus. So again, that sounds pretty cool in concept, and it sounds like just a little bit at least Bungie have been able to take some of the feedback over the past few months and apply it in Heresy. But lastly, he says on a personal note, this past November marked my 9th year at Bungie, and I've seen Bungie and Destiny go through many changes over the last decade.
What remains constant is the player community and Destiny's team commitment and dedication to this one of a kind space opera. and our drive to take Destiny places we could only have imagined a decade ago. So it's appropriate that during the 10th anniversary we reshape a game so we can continue the enduring legacy of this universe that millions of people call home. We're eternally grateful to you, our Guardians, for your passion and dedication to Destiny that enables us to chart a course to new frontiers.
And so that is the update today. Some useful bits of info in there really. Interesting insights into Apollo that should be launching next summer. We don't have a specific launch date yet but...
But again, with this being a new model moving away from very large expansions to something a bit smaller, and of course changes to the season model in general, it's going to be a really big year for Destiny. And of course, we'll see what Bungie can produce on that front. In the short term though, a couple of little teasers for the end of Revenant Act 3, those quests that'll be rolling out, and the exotic mission.
And otherwise, Heresy, which again, we'll have a better idea of when we actually get to see it. But obviously there are loads of opportunities when bringing back something like the Dreadnaught. We've discussed all of that. previously, so we won't go into too much detail. Hopefully, Bungie will do it justice.
