What's up guys, Houndesh here, and today we're jumping in with some new Destiny 2 updates, as well as news and discussion around Act 3, upcoming episode content, and the franchise as a whole. Initially, we've got a few updates from Bungie regarding content in the very near future. On top of that, we'll speak about a hidden epilogue for Episode Revenant, and some new interview segments with Bungie discussing the episode, as well as some of the challenges they face when producing episodic content and how they're looking at that moving forward, so...

There's some interesting insights there. But we'll also touch on the discussion around a D1 remaster and a lot of requests for Destiny 3. And I guess, unfortunately, we'll be discussing why it's pretty unlikely that either of those things are going to happen at any point in the very near future, or indeed the possibility that they will never happen. So quite a few things to discuss today guys, if you enjoyed the video, a rating below really does help us out.

And now, let's get into it. So to start with a couple of updates from Bunchy, they say. we've resolved an issue in which the Scorn Melodies triumph wasn't progressing correctly, and players can now play all melodies on the fully repaired Scorgon to acquire this triumph.

So if you're feeling musical, you can finally go for it. And otherwise, following the reveals just the other day about updates to Strange Coins, Cyphers and the Festival of the Lost Armour Bowden, apparently there are many, many more words to come in the following weeks. Weapons, abilities, PvP and artifacts. So it'll be interesting to see what else Bungie have got to say ahead of Heresy.

Another quick update here though, there were complaints a couple of days ago about how Bungie presented the trailer for Act 3, and specifically the perks for the exotic shotgun, as they were showing off various different artifact mods and abilities at the same time. And before we had our hands on the weapon, that certainly suggested some additional sandbox capabilities for Steyr's Fang that perhaps were not intrinsically tied to the weapon, so players showed some frustration around that. And the D2 team on Reddit said, we were trying to cram a shot of the artifact perk activating into the trailer, But looking back, it does come across as seemingly being caused by the shotgun. This wasn't our intent, but we appreciate the feedback and will try to make the functionality of different weapons and abilities more clear when producing future trailers.

So it's good that they've got that on the radar at the very least. Of course, we've seen this quite a few times with Destiny trailers, which tend to be pretty souped up. Of course, the trailer teams do a very good job, but in some instances things can be potentially a little misleading. So we'll see how that maybe changes in the future.

Something to discuss regarding the end of episode Revenant right here, but of course most of it concludes in the Kells Fall mission and the subsequent runs. But as folks have pointed out, there should be an epilogue with the Kells Vengeance variant of Contest of Elders. A spoiler alert is necessary to an extent here, although this is displayed both in the Triumphs in the game and via Bungie's press kit, but we have the Triumph Vengeance denied to complete the Kells Vengeance run of the Contest of Elders. And from looking at Bungie's press kit, we can see one of the folders is called epilogue, and it shows us an image of Skolas once again.

So clearly Skolas is going to be one of the bosses for this Kells Vengeance run of Contest of Elders. There was some expectation that this would drop on the first week of Act 3, but presumably it's going to be on a subsequent week. We know we're getting a game update next Tuesday, so we will more than likely see it then. On the subject of episode content though, recently Bungie spoke to Austin Wood, and Game Informer shared a few snippets of an interview with Bungie. So it's titled, If your cake is trash, nobody wants to eat it.

And it refers to Bungie dropping the exotic mission at a tough time for Destiny 2. But picking out the sections where they speak about episode content and how they're looking at it in the future, they say the challenging thing with the new model is that players have clear expectations about what things were in the past in terms of how they interact with vendors, or the pacing of the story and the amount of content. And with the episode model, there's Act 1 focused around Unstored, Act 2 focused on Tomb of Elders and 3 focused on the exotic. And some players are going to appreciate that, but Others will feel like they have smaller chunks to focus on initially, versus having them all to play with later. And those are some of the things that we're going to have to look at and be like, is this the right model?

What are the tweaks that we can make to it moving forward? And Tom Farnsworth from Bungie says, I think live service gameplay models are literally one of the hardest challenges. You can look out at the broader game industry right now, and it's rough out there.

And that's something that's going to be one of our biggest challenges. So they're looking at the right way to give players what they want. and let them have agency of experience, while also focusing on what will be a sustainable path forward. But it goes on to say you can't have one part of the game bear all the weight of someone's engagement, and if everyone's time is only focused on the episode and not playing the core game or other aspects of the release, then they're going to feel like they're going to eat everything and be done.

So I know going forward, we're going to be investing into as many areas of the game as we can to make sure that players have something to do for each mood that they're in, whether they want to engage with the story or want to engage with an exotic mission. the core game, PvP, playlists and all of that stuff. That's the challenge, making players feel like if they've gobbled up everything somewhere, they've got something else they can hop over to. And in a way it's good to see that recognised, right? They didn't say it directly, but they've identi- the fact that the core game has a lot of holes at the moment in terms of being able to continue to engage players.

And obviously, it's important that Bungie focus on that as well. Also in the interview, they talk about characters and how they wanted to wrap up a bunch of the character arcs and hang in threads with the end of this episode. And that's sort of a focus for episodes throughout the year. So just a few things from that interview right there.

They do touch on some other subjects like difficulty. So I'll link it down below if you want to check it out. Importantly, though, I do think that a bunch of developers are quietly identifying some of the problem areas without being too specific.

Hopefully it will be the case that they have enough resources to tackle some of the issues in those areas, but time will tell. And here we can kind of segue into some of the discussion around a D1 remaster and D3. And a lot of players are saying Destiny 3 is absolutely necessary in order to continue to engage players.

But on the subject of a D1 remaster… This conversation surfaced once again recently when the D1 Tower got that automatic update which added some unused assets from the dawning to it. DMG confirmed that there were some unintended echoes in Destiny 1, but he said the focus for development is Destiny 2 and will continue to see updates and development for some time in this space. Plus added that D1 will continue to be available, but no content or updates are planned.

And of course this doesn't refer to a D1 remaster specifically, but I feel like if a D1 remaster was even in the pipeline, was even a consideration for Bungie, they'd probably avoid making a statement like that, right? I think broadly, it's an indication of, well, exactly what he says. The focus is Destiny 2. And that also seems to apply to a potential Destiny 3. Going back to some reporting that we had a few months back after the second round of layoffs at Bungie, Paul Tassi at Forbes had said that sources provided information suggesting that instead of Destiny 3, or another Destiny game in the format that we know it, Bungie had been working on something called...

Payback, a third-person adventure spin-off shooter that Luke Smith and Mark knows where they were working on. They said it was a significant departure for the series, but of course, that project was later cancelled, and essentially that game was going to be instead of Destiny 3. And according to sources, Destiny 3 was and is considered too big of a risk in the current market, so the idea was to instead split up Destiny into more manageable components. The PvE portion that we have now, continuing in D2.

Payback as a separate adventure game expansion. Then of course the mobile game from Netease and Bungie reportedly had plans to spin out a separate 3v3 Crucible specific game focusing on trials like gameplay. But the indications from sources is that none of that is happening anymore and that Destiny 3 was never in production in the first place. So obviously Bungie have frontiers for Destiny 2 as well as Marathon and those are going to be big focuses for the next year.

There was also a justification that... One of the issues with Destiny as a franchise is that the player base was skewing much older than what the higher ups at Bungie wanted to see. And that was a contributing factor in Bungie's decision not to focus on Destiny 3. So anyway, the point is that all of the indications are that Destiny 3 was essentially hardly even considered as a potential future title.

They had instead focused on an action game which was later cancelled. And given what we know about restructuring at Bungie, the reduction in workforce, and the resources that were spent to both get Destiny 1 and 2 off the ground, which we should keep in mind also included additional studios from Activision back in the day when they were making Destiny 2. On that basis, and based on what we've heard, it's almost inconceivable that Bungie would be able to make a Destiny 3. And if they wanted a D3 to come out in a remotely timely fashion following up the conclusion of Destiny 2, that's something they would have had to already been working on many years back. right probably at least three or five years ago and so if bungie were to look at a destiny 3 at this point you'd probably be talking about destiny 2 no longer receiving updates and as a very bare minimum a two or three year wait before a destiny 3 would drop so as much as that sucks and from my personal point of view i think that that's one of the biggest missteps on top of getting newer players into the destiny franchise overall i think bungie should have been planning for a destiny 3 many years ago and spinning that up with, you know, 2023 or 2024 really being the final years of Destiny 2. Of course, we're now beyond that. So while I can't confirm that Bungie will never make a Destiny 3, I just don't think it looks very likely at this point. Unless, of course, things change within Bungie, and maybe it's something that Sony would try and pull off in the future.

But certainly it's not going to be happening in the near future. So share your thoughts about it down below. I do think it's a big mistake on Bungie's part, personally.

But I could be wrong. That's just my perspective. So let us know what you think in the comments.

For today guys, if you've enjoyed the video, a rating really does help us out.
