Stay Frosty Pulse Rifle Insights
Guys, I have spent some time with the Stay Frosty Pulse Rifle. Fellas, I don't like it. And I know everybody right now is glazing over this lightweight pulse rifle, but there's just something about it that just doesn't sit right with me.
Maybe it's due to the fact that I've already been blessed with some of the best lightweights in the game, from the BXR to Chattering Bone. I know lightweight pulse rifles aren't the best in the meta right now. They're clearly outclassed.
But despite those mathematical limitations, BXR and Chattering Bone... in my opinion, are the best lightweights in the game. The question is, does State Frosty present something here at all that can convince you to use this pulse rifle over any other? Now, for those that are not interested in this archetype, keep in mind, Bungie has already mentioned that they're going to be buffing this archetype in a big way. Pulled from the most recent TWAB, Bungie brought up the fact that they wanted to increase the viability of a couple medium-range options with lightweight pulse rifles and precision hand cannons.
And then proceeded to go on and mention that lightweight pulse rifles can feel too difficult to use for their time to kill. and time on target requirements. And that they're specifically bringing their optimal time to kill forgiveness through all resilience levels, increasing their body shot damage from 17 to 20.4 and their crit damage from 31.45 to 31.6. Now again, this isn't really going to move the needle in terms of changing the optimal time to kill, but it does allow for more forgiveness. And in this situation, what it's essentially going to allow is like flat footed, no headseeker, no other buffs after the update goes live.
on January the 14th, you'll be able to get the kill in six crits into body, or even five crits for body. Essentially what it means is that with this archetype, you're going to be able to get that guaranteed three bursts, which is like the only reason why we use adaptives inside of PvP. Time to kill wise, they're not that good, but what bygones allows in that 0.93 second time to kill value is that guaranteed three bursts. Stay frosty, including other lightweight post rifles are going to be able to guarantee that three bursts, but with a 0.87 time to kill value.
So without a doubt, guys, Lightweights are going to be meta. They're heading in that direction. Now, let's talk about Stay Frosted. I know we've yakked a whole bunch, and this is supposed to be a weapon review, not a Lightweight Pulse Rifle review, of which we will eventually get around to, especially considering how good BadJuju is doing right now. However, let's talk about this weapon, because it is interesting.
It is one of the weapons that are dropping from the donning. You can get multiple upgrades to allow you to get double perks on the weapon. It's got a lot of really good perks for both PvE and PvP players.
It's got some great origin traits with Dawning Surprise, which is very nice inside of PvE, and Amelan Fluid Dynamics, which is especially nice inside of PvP, as that essentially increases that reload speed and stability on the top half of your magazine. Now, for the longest time, I actually used to not like Amelan weapons, because I felt like Bungie intrinsically made them worse. And then would use things like Amelan Fluid Dynamics to mitigate that difference, which I know this is completely subjective, but that's just my opinion, at least previously. I would say though, Stay Frosty feels really good.
It's snag shots. You can feel the origin trait kicking in. And whether you're using a mediocre roll or a god roll, you could definitely feel the weapon pull to snag those crits for both controller players and even for my mouse and keyboard players. Now, before we get too deep into the weeds here for my PvP players, I do want to bring up a roll that I got inside of PvE.
And it's good. Rhyme Stealer and Headstone. Honestly, a perfect combination for this season in particular, considering we have artifact mods for Stasis. and it's wonderful here on Stay Frosty. You've got Headstone with the ability to create Stasis Crystals on precision kills.
You've got Rhyme Stellar, where destroying that Stasis Crystal or defeating a frozen target with a weapon grants you Frost Arm. It's a two-in-one for a Stasis weapon, which is exactly what Stay Frosty is. And you can see it in action, whether it's a combination of different builds, different synergies, this is a combo that we have greatly appreciated this past season.
So, if you do get this role, Windchill, Killing Breeze, One with Frost, Armor of Aramis, Hail the Storm. Brain Freeze. You've got so many different options, and they all synergize here with Rhyme Stealer and Headstone. And that's before we even get into Stasis, which we have a host of different fragments like Whisper of Rending, which boosts our primary ammo weapons damage by 100% against Stasis Crystals and 50% against Frozen Enemies.
And the list goes on in terms of Stasis synergy. The point I'm trying to make is that, without a doubt, when it comes to Stasis weapons, Rhyme Stealer, Headstone, always a great combination. And I particularly like it here with that Origin Trait Donning Surprise.
I know some people may look at this Origin Trait and just be like, okay, it's a fun little Origin Trait, nothing really that competitive about it. But it actually helps. Those Donning Gifts that you see on the ground, they last for 10 seconds. And when you pick them up, they grant you Grenade, Melee, or Class Ability Energy. They also restore HP.
It's not a lot, but it's something. And the activation requirements here do range depending on the type of enemy you take down, from Miners or Guardians only being 16.66%. Elites, mini-bosses, and bosses being 50%.
I kind of wish Bungie would pick those numbers up a bit more. I think 16% against minors is a bit too low, maybe 25%. But without a doubt, though, guys, that combo, in my opinion, is worth going after. Now, in terms of DPS, how does it stack against other pulse rifles?
When you look across the board, at the very top, you've got your heavy burst pulse rifle sitting at 16,590 DPS. Rapid Virus, like Grit Skipper, which we recently reviewed, is at second place with 14,732. But in third place, and I mean just barely in third place, you've got Stay Frosty and other lightweights at 14,268. Now keep in mind, this is all at base.
For instance, like even though adaptives here are at 14,133, if you got a vantage point... with Jolting Feedback, then obviously the damage is going to be much, much higher. But from a base scenario, technically, yes, Lightweights do come in at third place. Now, what was disclosed to us in the TWAB seems to be pointing at only a damage buff inside of PvP.
But keep in mind, in the past, we have had overlap, which is why we always do pre-testing and post-testing. And if we even see just a slight buff inside of PvE that overlaps here, then suddenly... Lightweights could actually overtake rapid fires inside of PvE in terms of base DPS. Now should you kill yourself getting the Stay Frosty roll, Rhyme Stealer, and Headstone? No, I would just say while you're doing the donning event, if you come across that roll, I would personally lock it in.
I know Frenzy is present on here, Desperate Measures is here, hell even Desperado. But for my PvE players, that Headstone Rhyme Stealer roll, in my opinion, is what makes this weapon unique. Now for my PvP guys. Look man, I've really tried to give this Pulse Rifle a go. I've tried out different combinations, different roles.
I've even hopped on people's accounts and tried the quote-unquote god roles. I was on Mr. Garnet's account, and he had literally everything we would want. High range, lone wolf, headseeker, and kill clip.
Literally on the same weapon. And my conclusion that I have found would stay frosted is that it is, in fact, a phenomenal weapon for controller players. Now, that's not to say you can't get kills on mouse and keyboard, but in my opinion, BXR is the supreme choice for mouse and keyboard players.
And there's a few contributing factors to that, of course. Its frame literally allows you to shoot from the hip, and for mouse and keyboard players, it's especially nice. It's also extremely fluid, and stat-wise, it's a monster.
Stay Frosty also has some pretty good stats, but it is a more typical lightweight frame. And my experience playing with it on both controller and mouse and keyboard is that I'm leaning more toward this weapon being more of a controller weapon. That's not to say that it can't be utilized for mouse and keyboard players.
And yes, that kill clip roll is very nice in 6v6 alongside Headseeker. Nope. as being the swap-off option for taking on 1v1s.
But I think the thing that pulled me back the most when using Stay Frosty was not its inability to snag those first sets of bursts, hitting crit after crit. It doesn't. It's beautiful. It's the moment we start taking gunfire that Stay Frosty, for me, falls off.
The moment that Criminal's Dagger starts piecing me up, or that Messenger, or LC, weapons that deliver a lot of flinch and a big burst of damage, I felt like I struggled with Stay Frosty. But on controller, We have the power of aim assist, which essentially means you can blow your load in my face, but subsequently, I can also blow my load into yours. Neither one of us deviating from our shot from the almighty aim assist. And by the way, I'm not hating on controller players.
This is just an observation. And my observation is that stay frosty, although I am going to be locking down the god rolls. To me, it's not my first choice for mouse and keyboard, but potentially a top three choice for controller players. Now, I know what some of you are saying.
Cross, you're washed. You used to be good at reviewing weapons. Now you just suck. Fellas, it's just my opinion. On the flip side, I actually feel like I'm a pretty good barometer.
If the weapon pops, nine times out of ten, it's the weapon speaking. It ain't me. Just saying. And considering I'm playing the same 15 people inside of Crucible plus Cheaters, a weapon's got to sing if it's going to hang with this crew. Have you seen how sweaty it is?
Now, for my PvP players, what would I recommend? Look, I think 55 recoil direction is pretty good. If you absolutely wanted to go Arrowhead Break, by all means, go right ahead.
As a matter of fact, you could max things out with Counterbalance. A controller player would probably appreciate that more. I like more range. I think the stability of 52 is very, very good.
Agorized rounds, though, the boost is up with the range masterwork. Would almost put us at 60 range, putting us at a little over 34.5 meters with that arrowhead break roll. Now, in terms of that third and fourth cop, I actually rolled a lone wolf and a moving target roll together.
And moving target used to be like one of my go-to perks. But guys, I am really feeling lone wolf. The enhanced version is nice.
It. It passively grants you 11 aim assist, 12 airborne effectiveness, and a 0.85x ADS duration multiplier. And one of the things that was brought up on stream the other day, someone asked, is Lone Wolf even worth it considering you have teammates around you?
Keep in mind, guys, those bonuses are being applied even when you're around your teammates. It's when your teammates are no longer around you that those stat bonuses are doubled. So it's not to say that Lone Wolf isn't good only when teammates are around you. It just goes from being good to really good.
Now, in terms of the traits that combine with it, Two perks here, guys, without a doubt. Headseeker, Kill Clip. Matter of fact, if you can land the Kill Clip Headseeker role, and you're a controller player, have at it, fellas.
You're gonna shred. Now, Headseeker, I don't think it's gonna really move the needle all that much come January 14th with that update. We're already gonna have a tremendous amount of forgiveness, and you're pretty much always gonna have a guaranteed...
burst. You're aiming in that like neck area, chest area, you're going to be just fine. Which means Kill Clip may become the default option across the board, even for things like Trials of Osiris.
Now what Headseeker does present is that it passively grants you that 5 stability with the enhanced version. It also increases that aim assist cone size. And that's the thing that we can't overlook when it comes to consistency and ensuring that 1v1, that Lone Wolf Headseeker role is top notch. And that is something it has over BXR. Granted, at the same time, right around the corner, you got Chattering Bone, which in my opinion, is one of the best line weights in the game and it can roll things like keep away head seeker and i also just personally love the reticle on that weapon which could be a deciding factor for you when it comes to stay frosty do you like that circular reticle or do you like chattering bones reticle or do you like bxr and these are very different reticles across the board all the same archetype but very different overall if i had to give a ranking to stay frosty i would say it's currently b tier see what plays out though after the changes for my pve players there's a role there for you with rhymes dylan henstone for my PvP players.
If you get lucky, you've got those double traits. Get that kill clip headseeker combination with Lone Wolf. That'll be a solid set of options going into our next sandbox. Guys, that is our review. If you have not done the donning, we have a guide on it down below.
If you check it out, it is a bit buggy, but hopefully Bungie has fixed those things. We do have some things in the guide, though, that will allow you to work around and even navigate some of those issues and buffs. Fellas and ladies, thank you all for coming and watching.
And as always, slap that like button like your mama told you, right?
